Class Reflection: March 17
One thing which I usually notice whenever I teach here is that although my content of the teaching might be rich and comprehensive, it does not seem to be fan for my audience. There might be several factors behind it. One factor might be that I do not have the skill of creating fanny environment while teaching. Second, it might be becuase my audience are not the real audience who need what I offer them as a lesson. This means they know what I know about teaching and probably even more than me. The third reason might be that I may not give myself enough time to plan before I teach. This means I may not prepare as much as others do. Nevertheless, over all, I have seen a very much progress in my knowlege of teaching, and a saticefactory change in my practice of teaching so far. I would say teaching is more of an art and experience than knowledge or theory.

I agree on what you said "teaching is something more art than passing down your knowledge or theories.
I agree that teaching excellence is rooted in experience and that it is somewhat of an art, but categorizing it as an art implies that only few talented people have what it takes. To me teaching is a skill, which can be developed to artistic level, but that's not obligatory/realistic.
It is nice to know the theories, just to make sure that what you are doing and what makes sense to you has some research support. You know, just in case.
While I agree that teaching is an art and gets better with experience - it also is a science =in the sense that we know a lot about how people learn, how memory works, how groups behave, what tests fairly show what one has learned etc.
A good teacher is one who knows the science and has a feeling for his or her students and what will work for them, She/he provides an optimum learning enviroment.
I think that preparation is very important. Planning and preparation polish a lesson.
As teachers become more experienced they perhaps need less prep time.
